How do I turn on the electricity in my room?

If nothing is working in the room it’s probably because the fuses are off – check the fuse box above the front door and make sure all switches are facing upwards, including the lonely switch on the end.

Once you have done this, try to turn the electricals on again. Also, the fridge, oven, extractor fan and hob have separate switches in the kitchen – make sure these are on too.

Why isn’t my shower working?

There is a separate isolator switch for the shower – this will either be to the left of the bathroom door (often behind the bin!) or above the shower door. This needs to be switched on.

Please note, your shower is not a power shower. Please bear this in mind when assessing water pressure.

Why isn't my microwave working?

It sounds simple but check that your microwave is plugged into the wall, and the switch is on. The plug socket and switch can be found on the wall behind the microwave so it's easy to miss. You may need to stretch. If it is plugged in and the switch is on, double check the fuse box as above.

Why is there not enough hot water coming out of the taps?

Each room has a separate water heater which holds 10L of water – once this is used it can take 30 minutes to heat the water again, so try not to use it all at once. If you do want to have a long shower and then wash up, think about boiling your kettle to top up the warm water.

How big is my sink?

The bathroom sink is 55cm, the kitchen sink is 33cm square, and the draining board 70cm.
 

How do I reset my safe?

  1. With the door of the safe open, remove the cover (located on the inside of the door near the hinges) press the red button and the display will show 'SET CODE'
  2. Enter a 3 to 8 digit code that you wish to have a your new user code, then confirm by pressing the 'START' button.
  3. You will hear a beep and the screen will display 'IN' and the digits you entered. This is confirmation that your code has been successfully changed.

Top tips

WATCH OUT FOR SCRATCHES ON YOUR HOB

Keeping your room in great condition will not only make it nicer to live in, but could help you avoid charges later on. Your hob has a glass-ceramic surface and can be damaged if not cared for.

Scratches can be one of the main issues. There are many reasons that can cause scratching so try to avoid the following:
 

  • The rough surface of the pots and pans and rough handling of the cookware can cause scratches
  • Sliding the cookware across the surface or thumping heavy stuff on it can lead to scratches
  • Sliding cookware across hot spills containing crystals of sugar or salt can cause scratches
  • Cookware materials which are harder and heavier than the glass-ceramic surface like hard ceramic, cast iron, etc. can easily scratch the surface.
  • Using it at as an extension of the countertop by cutting veggies and placing cups, saucers, stuff on it can lead to scratches
